Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Despite COVID-19

Hispanic Heritage Month began more than 30 years ago, when President Ronald Reagan expanded the nation’s Hispanic Heritage Week. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15 through October 15. This year is no different.

Despite COVID-19 throwing a wrench in our plans, there are still a variety of different ways to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. While some of these events have ties to the DFW metroplex, there are others that will be done virtually which will allow you to engage with Hispanic and Latinx communities from all over the world!

Saltillo Day 2020 El Grito
Tuesday, September 15
12:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Enjoy live music straight from Saltillo, Mexico followed by an interactive virtual loteria game.

A cooking class on how to prepare a Coahuila specialty, the Discada dish, will also be presented.

Come and virtually celebrate contemporary Guatemalan/Mayan Heritage, traditional music, art, cuisine, and more.

09/15/2020 marks 198 years since Guatemala’s Independence Day; embrace the life and culture of the heart of the Mayan world.

Viva México
Wednesday, September 16
6:00 PM- 9:00 PM

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center will host its annual Viva México celebration completely virtually, free of charge for all, live streamed on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Texas Upstander: The Life of Héctor P. García

This virtual event, hosted by The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, will feature Dr. Héctor P. García’s daughter and author of The Inspiring Life of Texan Héctor P. García, Cecilia García Akers. She will talk about Dr. García’s legacy of being committed to social reform, offering low- and no-cost treatment to impoverished patients, setting up the American GI Forum to advocate for equal services for Mexican American veterans, and fighting for equality in education.

The iconic Calle Ocho Music Festival 2020 that was previously cancelled in March will return this year on October 4th as Calle Ocho Live (www.CalleOchoLive.com)

#CalleOchoLive, a live stream and broadcast TV Hispanic Heritage Month-themed extravaganza that will feature major music artists, a variety show and many creative surprises.


Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on September 15 because Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all share that date as their Independence Day. The people of Mexico and Chile celebrate theirs on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
